Presidents Cup role for Obama

June 5th, 2009

Barack Obama is set to be the honorary chairman of The Presidents Cup.

The US president will become the eighth world leader to have held the position when the event is played in October, following the likes of former Australian prime minister John Howard and former US presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush. The Presidents Cup is contested between two 12-player teams, with the United States facing a line-up pooled from the rest of the world apart from Europe.

Monty backs Casey to claim a major

June 5th, 2009

Colin Montgomerie believes Paul Casey can fulfill his “great potential” and and win a major in 2009.

The Englishman moved up to third spot in the world rankings following his one-shot victory in the BMW PGA Championship last month.

Casey’s success at Wentworth meant he became the first Brit to break into the top three since Montgomerie. Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam are the only others to achieve the feat since the rankings began in 1986.

European captain Montgomerie admitted to Sky Sports News that he is not surprised by the rise of his former Ryder Cup team-mate.

“He’s always had great potential because of the length he can hit the ball,” he said ahead of the duo participating in the Wales Open.

“If he can just get that putting right, which if there was a weakness then that was it, then he will be holing out well. Then he will win again.

“He’s risen very, very quickly - from the 20s at the start of the year. There’s an awful lot of talent in Europe and he’s one of (them).”

Montgomerie now feels Casey can kick on and win one of the three remaining majors this year - starting with the US Open at Bethpage Black on June 18.

However, the Scot also feels there are several other leading European candidates for success - including Rory McIlroy.

“Paul is a potential Major winner,” Montgomerie enthused.

“Padraig Harrington has opened the door if you like, and said to the rest of Europe that yes, it is possible.

“There’s a (Sergio) Garcia waiting in the wings for a major. There’s a Paul Casey, there’s a (Henrik) Stenson, there’s a (Robert) Karlsson, there’s a (Lee) Westwood, there’s a (Rory) McIlory. There’s a number of them.

“The Open Championship coming up at Turnberry will be a fantastic event.”

Tiger Woods to play at Memorial

June 5th, 2009

After a three-week break, Tiger Woods will return to the PGA Tour at this week’s Memorial Tournament.

The world number one last played competitive golf during the Players Championship where he finished a disappointing eighth.

In all, Woods has so far played six tournaments since returning from knee surgery, with five consecutive top 10s and a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

This will be his 10th appearance at the Memorial, where he has won three times - 1999, 2000 and 2001.

He missed last year’s tournament due to knee surgery performed just after the Masters, then went on to win the U.S. Open two weeks later before ACL surgery knocked him out for the rest of the year.

Woods, ranked No. 1 in the world, is part of a field that boasts seven of the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings and eight of the top 10 on the PGA Tour money list.

Wu Ashun added to Luxehills field

June 5th, 2009

Fast-rising Asian Tour star Alex Wu Ashun will return to the Omega China Tour to compete in next week’s Luxehills Golf Championship.

The Shanghai-based 23-year-old is still searching for his first professional victory after coming close in the Omega China Tour’s season-opening Dell Championship in Xiamen, where he finished joint runner-up behind fellow Fujian favourite Wu Weihuang.

“I really want to win, but many others want to and also have the ability. It all depends on how I play at Luxehills, as there are now so many players at a similar level,” said Wu, one of only three Chinese competing on the Asian Tour.

Chinese Taipei’s Tsai Chi-huang will be among the favourites in the RMB1 million event in Chengdu after winning last year’s inaugural Luxehills event with a Tour-record 18-under total of 270, although Wu doesn’t believe that target will be matched next week.

“I practised at Luxehills for three days last week and the course is not easy. I don’t know how Tsai Chi-huang made 18-under last year!” Wu said. “It’s a beautiful layout with a good design and a lot of bunkers. The greens are big, so there will be a lot of choice for the pin positions.”

Wu has finished in the top-20 in nine of his 10 total appearances on his domestic circuit, bagging five top-10 placings.

However, he was playing an Asian Tour event during April’s Sofitel Zhongshan IGC Open in Nanjing, where eventual champion Kurt Barnes was among 10 PGA Tour of Australasia pros making their debut on the Tour.

“The Australian players have made the Omega China Tour more competitive, more challenging,” Wu said. “It looks more like the Asian Tour with so many foreign faces. I’m looking forward to the Luxehills tournament.”

On course to follow Zhang Lianwei and Liang Wenchong into the international golfing arena, Wu is blossoming in his second season on the Asian Tour.

He currently lies 24th on the Order of Merit after winning US$58,366 in five events, having finished joint-fourth in the Singh Thailand Open and tied for seventh in the Asian Tour International.

Last year the rookie pro failed to retain his card after finishing 78th on the Order of Merit with US$55,883, but regained it by coming joint-fifth in January’s Qualifying School.

“I’m in good condition this year and becoming a steadier player during tournaments. I’ve become mentally stronger and more mature. I can feel that I’m growing up,” said Wu, who turned pro after qualifying for last year’s Asian Tour, having spent most of 2007 working on his game in California.

Wu, Barnes and Zhang Lianwei, a six-time winner on the Omega China Tour, are among the big names making their Luxehills debut next week.

Liao Guiming and big-hitting Yuan Hao were second and third last year, while eight-time champion Li Chao, Omega Championship winner Zhou Jun and local star Huang Mingjie are among other leading Chinese pros returning to Luxehills.

The field will again include 10 pros from the PGA Tour of Australasia, 10 China-based foreigners from Qualifying School and up to two invites from each of Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau.

Casey in line for Wentworth success

May 26th, 2009

Paul Casey has set himself some lofty goals for this year.

But although he is keeping them secret reaching number three in the world was almost certainly not among them.

That would have been asking an awful lot given the fact that he started 2009 down in 41st place, yet he is up to seventh and victory in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth tomorrow will take him there.

The Ryder Cup star, with wins in Abu Dhabi and America already to his name, went into the third round this afternoon eight under par and two ahead of defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez, Scot Marc Warren, England’s Anthony Wall and David Horsey and Dane Soren Kjeldsen.

Casey was asked after a second-round 67 containing two eagles whether he was at all surprised by the impact he has made this season.

“I don’t know what the right word is - sort of gratifying or a sense of accomplishment,” he answered.

“It’s nice because of the work I’ve been putting in, but I don’t want to say surprising because I think that would be wrong.”

Four years ago the 31-year-old’s career was in real crisis - and his slump included a bad experience at this week’s venue.

After failing to break 80 at the Forest of Arden, Casey had two 78s round the West Course and feared for the safety of spectators because he was so wild.

He then went to the US Open at Pinehurst, collapsed to an opening 85 and could not bring himself to play a second round.

Two more missed cuts followed, but gradually his game and his confidence were put back together and just a year later he won the £1million first prize in the World Match Play at Wentworth and a week after that helped Europe to victory in the Ryder Cup by becoming the first player ever to end a match with a hole-in-one.

His self-belief is at an all-time high now, but by finishing bogey-par on the two closing par-fives yesterday his halfway advantage was not what it might have been.

Casey also had to seek a replacement shaft for the four-iron he bent round a tree on the 17th - and since it was a special type he thought that might prove quite a task.

Jimenez is trying to emulate Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie in making a successful defence of the title, while Kjeldsen is seeking a third win in the last six months.

Wall, Horsey and Warren are quite simply seeking the biggest victory of their lives.

Londoner Wall’s only success in more than 300 Tour events was in South Africa nine years ago, Warren’s World Cup win with Montgomerie in China two years ago would be eclipsed if he grabbed the first prize of almost £670,000.

And Horsey? The Cheshire 24-year-old was in the Walker Cup with Rory McIlroy in 2007 and last season won the “second division” Challenge Tour.

Casey does not worry about several of the event’s biggest names. Angel Cabrera, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, Retief Goosen, Paul McGinley and Oliver Wilson, last year’s runner-up, are all already out.

Wie digs deep to make cut

May 26th, 2009

Michelle Wie overcame a dismal first day at the LPGA Corning Classic with a 5-under-par 67 to make the weekend in New York.

The cut for the weekend was 3 under.

Despite her mini-comeback, Wie still trail leader Karine Icher at the Corning Country Club by ten strokes.

Wie is now tied for 52nd at 4-under 140.

The American has made the cut in all seven LPGA tournaments she has played in this year.

Starting on the back nine today, she had consecutive birdies on three par-4s, the Nos. 16, 17 and 18.

After a bogey on the par-4 No. 1, she added birdies on Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 7 to go to 6 under.

She bogeyed the par-4 No. 8 to finish at 5 under.

Sabbatini and Mallinger lead

May 26th, 2009

Rory Sabbatini shot a 64 to claim a share of the halfway lead alongside John Mallinger at the Byron Nelson Championship.

It was a season-low round of six-under-par for Sabbatini at TPC Four Seasons.
Sabbatini signed for seven birdies, including four in a row on the front nine, against just one bogey to move onto eight-under-par overall and a shot clear of a group of five a shot adrift alongside Mallinger who carded a second round five under 65.

Byron Nelson Championship leaderboard

Mallinger eagled both par fives and picked up four birdies, including a 15 foot putt at the 18th to earn a share of the lead, but his card also included three bogeys.

First round co-leader and PGA Tour rookie James Nitties (68), Brian Davis (65) with his sixth consecutive round in the 60s, Briny Baird (64), James Driscoll (66), who finished with back-to-back bogeys, and Dustin Johnson (65) sit in the group at seven under and tied for third.

Ken Duke, who shared the first round lead, shot a 69 and sits two back alongside Robert Allenby (67) and DA Points (66).

Defending champion Adam Scott, though, missed the cut by three strokes after a second consecutive 71.

Icher claims outright lead

May 26th, 2009

Karine Icher carded a second round six-under-par 66 to claim the outright lead at the Corning Classic by two strokes.

Following her flawless opening round 64, 29-year-old Icher, the first round co-leader at eight under alongside Park Hee-young, dropped just one shot during her second round at Corning Country Club after finding the greenside bunker at the par four first, her 10th of the day, to move onto 14 under after 36 holes.

2006 champion Han Hee-won, 30, remained within touching distance after beginning her round with an eagle before picking up five birdies but finishing with two bogeys over her last three holes.

“My driving was not so good as yesterday, so I missed some of the fairways,” said Icher.

“I did good today from the fairway, so I’m happy about that, but still a good day. I had good putts, and it was a good round.

“Right now, what is working right now is more my driving and then my putting.

“Typically, on this kind of course, if you drive in the middle and then you putt well, obviously you’re going to make some birdies because it’s not a very long course. So you’re going to have some short irons to play.”

Sandra Gal (69), Mikaela Parmlid (67), Lee Seon-hwa (67), Choi Na-yeon (68), Sarah Kemp (68) and Kang Soo-yun (69) sit in a group of six at 10-under-par overall.

First round co-leader Park, 21, plummeted down the leaderboard into a tie for 20th after shipping two double bogeys in a one over 73.

Cabrera, Stenson miss cut

May 26th, 2009

The last two rounds of the BMW PGA Championship will be played without a whole list of star names.

Masters champion Angel Cabrera crashed out on five over after a 75, Players Championship winner Henrik Stenson and South African Retief Goosen were only one better than that and last year’s runner-up Oliver Wilson managed only a seven-over aggregate.

Lee Westwood, meanwhile, had a second-successive 77 for 10 over - his worst 36-hole score in Europe for six years.

Since finishing second to Colin Montgomerie when the Scot completed a hat-trick of victories in 2000 Westwood has not made the cut seven out of nine times.

Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter stayed away for the second year running this week and Westwood said: “I know where they are coming from - and I might join the club.

“The greens were the best I’ve seen here ironically for many a year,” he added, the irony being that next week all 18 are being ripped up and redone.

“I just didn’t hit it very well, but I missed only one cut in Europe last year and that was here.”

Paul McGinley led by four at halfway at 13 under last year, but an 80 sent him tumbling out on nine over.

John Daly would have sat out the last 36 holes as well but for chipping in on the 13th and 15th for birdies - the second of those from a bunker - and then the 17th for eagle.

“I don’t think I’ve chipped in three times in a full year, let alone one day,” he said after handing in a level-par aggregate.

And when told he seemed to be enjoying being in Europe during his six-month US Tour ban the American replied: “I’m like Jesus - I love all of you!”

Montgomerie looked as if he might be slipping out of it when he bogeyed the 15th and double-bogeyed the last to be back to level par, but he birdied the last two for a 73.
